How to read a charter deal
A "20% off" banner tells you very little on its own. Check these seven things before you decide a charter deal is actually good.
1. The headline price is only the base fee
Charter prices usually cover only the boat. One broker suggests budgeting 40–70% on top of the base fee to estimate the final cost of a charter [WI Yachts]. For bareboat trips from Athens, Up & Sail suggests adding 20–30% for fuel, food, marina fees and gratuity [Up & Sail]. Compare deals on the total cost, not the headline.
2. Compare it with the normal price for that season
Seasons move prices more than most discounts do. In the BVI, Sunsail says high-season rates can be double or more compared with low season [Sunsail]. 15% off a Christmas week can still cost more than a full-price week in May. Use the season tables on each destination page as your baseline.
3. Read the dates: book-by and travel windows
Most offers have two deadlines: when you must book and when you must sail. For example, the Mediterranean offers we checked on 20 Oct 2026 had to be booked by November 2, 2026 and only applied to departures up to November 30, 2026, with a minimum charter of 7 days [Sunsail] [The Moorings]. Short-break deals such as Dream Yacht's "Calendar Gap" offers apply to 3–6 day charters on selected dates only [Dream Yacht Worldwide].
4. List the mandatory extras
- Damage waiver or deductible reduction. Examples: about $600 a week on a small monohull or $910 on a 44 ft catamaran with Sunsail in the BVI [Sunsail], and $100 a night with Waypoints in St. Thomas [Virgin Island Sailing (broker)].
- Local taxes and permits, such as a 4% Bahamas tax on Moorings Exumas charters [Virgin Island Sailing (broker)] and BVI cruising permits at about $4 per person per day [Sunsail].
- A security deposit, for example $3,000–5,000 on a Grenadines bareboat [SVG Yachting].
5. Check the boat's age and class
The same model can be priced in different tiers. In St. Martin, The Moorings lists a 1–3 year old "Exclusive" Leopard 4200 at $5,950 and a 3–6 year old "Club" one at $5,355 for a low-season week [Virgin Island Sailing (broker)]. A deal on an older boat might just be the normal price for an older boat.
6. Work out the cost per person
Charter prices are for the whole boat. SVG Yachting suggests dividing by the number of cabins to get the real cost per couple [SVG Yachting]. A cheaper 3-cabin boat can cost more per person than a 4-cabin one.
7. Price in a skipper if you need one
If you don't have the required licence or résumé, add a skipper. Typical costs are about $249 a day plus meals in the Exumas [Virgin Island Sailing (broker)], about $300 a day in St. Thomas [Virgin Island Sailing (broker)], and from €150 a day in Phuket [Yochting].
